Non-Yuri Fun of the Week: Touhou Lucky Star

Today, my Yuri toplist is over. I still have a lot of series to write down, and even more reviews and comments and summaries and discussions on series themselves, but I think we all deserve a break from Yuri, especially since ilikeicecream has been so blunt about it.

"I had enough of it," he said, before he turned his back on the shining beacon that was my Yuri. Those five words shattered something within me, and from then on, life was never the same.

Just joking, man. Everyone has different tastes. I was intending to put something completely unrelated up, since I was in the mood for some randomness, and so here it is.  Phantasmagoria Flower View, yo! Also, I'm not sure why this text shows up so tiny. 

Isn't this just great? Touhou Project, that crazy video game that's full of bullet hell, has now been combined with Lucky Star's OP to create an amalgamation of equal parts insanity and hilarity.

I'll throw some background in here, for those who have no idea what the f*ck is going on. Basically, Touhou Project is a crazy top-down bullet hell shooter that has a variety of characters to choose from, and various peculiar plots that have spawned a huge fan following in Japan.

As you can tell, it's pretty intense. Lucky Star, on the other hand, is an anime that's made up almost entirely of Japanese in-jokes, memes, tropes, and more anime acknowledgements and references. The main character Konata is a total geek (an otaku, if you want to say it that way), and her interactions with her friends through various school situations is oddly humorous to follow. It has also spawned a huge fan following, both in Japan and in them other countries.

I wonder who the geek is.

Lucky Star's anime opening has tons of parodies. For comparison, I present to you the original.

There's also a live action parody, and pretty much any popular anime/videogame you can think of probably has a parody either on Youtube, or on Nico Nico Douga. >.> Yeah, it's more widespread than you thought it was!

Nubilus wrote a long comment for my Sasameki Koto post, so here's a response. I've read Lone Wolf and Cub and thought it was pretty awesome (stylistically, too), and it's too bad there aren't more manga that focus on realism and feudal Japan. Lots of feudal Japan manga are out there, but most of them have pretty dudes, or magical supernatural explosions, or people with giant swords or something along those lines. Introduce me to some realistic ones! I'll go check out Samurai Executioner, in the meantime.
